Fairy tale debut win for tough young thoroughbred
Devonport, TAS — June 16, 2025
In a story straight from the pages of a racing fairytale, three-year-old thoroughbred Blameitontheboogie—fondly known as Boogie—overcame years of setbacks to win his very first race in emphatic fashion at Devonport on Sunday.
Bred by stallion Sooboog and purchased as a weanling by Regal Racers & Bloodstock, Boogie’s journey to the winner’s circle has been anything but smooth. From a lowered immune system and persistent respiratory infections as a foal to painful hoof abscesses, his early health troubles kept expectations cautious. But perhaps the most serious setback came as a yearling, when he impaled himself on a star picket post, suffering a chest injury that would sideline most young prospects indefinitely.
Despite these challenges, Boogie was given every chance. He was broken in by Tyler Aitken in Ballarat before joining trainer Glenn Stevenson with the aim of preparing for a two-year-old campaign. But when he arrived in Devonport, a few sniggers were had about the undersized colt who looked too quiet to be a contender as a racehorse.
Fast-forward to Sunday’s 1009-metre maiden—and the mood had shifted. Boogie silenced the doubters in style, ridden by Codi Jordan, surging to a commanding three-and-a-half length victory in solid time. There were no sniggers at the track this time—only cheers.
“He’s a little champ,” said Stevenson after the race.
“He’s been through more than most horses will ever experience before even seeing a starting gate. To come out and do what he did today… it’s a great story.” said Regal Racers & Bloodstock owner Matt Young.
The win marks not only a major milestone for the team behind Boogie but also a moment of vindication for a horse that’s defied the odds from the start.
From sickly weanling to impressive debut winner—Boogie’s tale is one of grit, patience, and belief. And if Sunday’s performance is any indication, this might just be the beginning.
